Have you caught many? They could be down your street or behind the bus! There are 143 in total, some of which are hatched from eggs. Pokemon Go is a revolution in the way (some) people play games and the furore since it’s release on July 6 th and has got people whose gaming would normally leave them cooped up indoors, out and about instead. It’s a clever concept, but certainly not the first that has encouraged us to imagine an alternate reality (in this case, a virtual-reality) that intersects with ours. The Matrix movies, or ‘The chronicles of Narnia’ by C.S.Lewis have been engaging our longing for a reality outside of our own for years. More recently the ‘paranormal’ hunters and the newly wrapped ‘Ghostbusters’ movie has kindled interest in questions about a reality beyond what we can physically see. What do you think? Is there a spiritual realm that we can experience with our 5 senses? I meet loads of people who believe there is but who lack any, or have only dubious evidence. Having a scientific background, I’m not one to be easily duped (I hope!) and want evidence. But as a Christian, I think there is evidence of a spiritual reality beyond what we can see. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about the things of horror movies! I’m talking about a reality that has lived in, experienced and spoken into our world in ways which, if we’d been there, we’d have experienced ourselves. Sound interesting? One of the most famous passages in the bible speaks of Jesus, saying ‘He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him…the One and Only who came from the Father.’ Jesus came from God into our world so we wouldn’t be left guessing about what’s real. No games; no hiding behind shops. He was born, lived and died before returning to his Father, doing it all so we might experience life with God. Believing this is a real revolution, but it’s not a game. It really is life and death!
