Loss & Bereavement

The terrible feeling of losing someone can happen to any of us. The more important they have been in our lives the harder it will be to let go and accept that our loved one is really gone. Being a Christian or a person of faith does not shield us from the sadness of bereavement and the pain of loss. We live in a broken world and bad things can happen to us whether or not we believe in God and ask for his help. Yet if you are a believer, a Christian, you will find hope and comfort through your relationship with Jesus. I remember years ago visiting an elderly lady who told me how devastated she was when the news of her husband’s death reached her and how she felt, could sense, the arms of Jesus around her bringing comfort and peace. This made such a difference to her through her journey of grief.

In the Bible we can read that God knows all of humanity, right down to the numbers of hairs on each of our heads. In one of his most famous passages of teaching, Jesus Christ talked about grief. In the Bible book Matthew he says ‘blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted...’ To be blessed is to experience a deep sense of peace and hope, whatever your circumstances or situation. Jesus tells us through what he said, the stories he told and the way he gave his life up for others, that God cares deeply for everyone and hears all who call out to him.
